This paper describes the development of an innovative farm concept for pig production and valuable fertilisers, including: sustainability of the system regarding building materials, mineral management, gaseous emissions and energy and water inputs (LCA-approach); manure management directed at on farm production of fertilisers from urine and faeces. utilisation of locally produced organic waste input in pig diets; management of pig production with special focus on animal health and animal welfare; The core of the project is the chain from animal feed via digestion by pigs, kept in an optimal environment (with regard to growth results, health and welfare), to fertiliser production from faeces and urine. At the basis of the housing concept is a system that allows separated collection of faeces and urine in the animal pen followed by on-farm treatment of both fractions. Separate collection and rapid removal of both fractions improves hygienic and climatic conditions in the animal confinement area. The separation also creates options for separate processing and production of a nitrogen rich liquid fertiliser and a stabilised solid fraction containing all the phosphorus. The urine is concentrated by water evaporation using exhaust ventilation air and metabolic heat from the pigs. The evaporation process is combined with a scrubbing technique to control emission. Animal health and welfare are subject to research in the project. Decontamination of incoming air, optimised climate control, confinement area available to animals and provision of straw to fulfil behavourial needs all receive attention in the system design. The system is currently being developed by a research group with multidisciplinary collaboration between research centres and private companies.
