The control of nitrogen top dressing by optical sensing of crop reflectance or -fluorescence is dealt with. Reflectance sensing using the point of inflection in the red-infrared range is based on the chlorophyll-concentration in the leaves as well as on the leaf-area-index. Fluorescence sensing depends only on the chlorophyll-concentration in the leaves. Therefore reflectance signals are better suited for sensing the nitrogen supply. However, fluorescence signals should be explored for indicating the crop stress.
