Gas and Odor Emissions from High-Rise™ and Deep-Pit Swine Finishing Facilities

Air samples were collected from the exhaust from a 960-head, High-riseTM swine finishing facility and a nearby 1000-head deep-pit finishing facility during 4 finishing cycles in 1999-2001. The replicated air [bag] samples were analyzed for ammonia and hydrogen sulfide concentrations and then shipped to the University of Minnesota for olfactometry analysis. Ammonia concentrations of exhaust air from the High-riseTM facility were slightly higher, 3 ppm higher on average, than for the comparison facility, while total reduced-sulfur concentrations were 176 ppb less, and odor-detection threshold values were roughly 460 OU lower, on average, than for the comparison facility. The High-rise TM facility emitted more ammonia, about 160 g/m2/s on average, but less reduced-sulfur compounds and odor than the comparison facility, roughly 16 g/m2/s and 28 OU/m2/s, respectively.
