Combustion analyses of poultry manure from egg layers and pullets were performed. Emission rates of volatiles were calculated. Results suggest that poultry manure has a heating value of approximately 9,300 kJ kg-1 and an ash content ranging from 32 to 47% of the dry matter. Estimated emissions from inclusion of 20% poultry manure with coal in a coal fired boiler does not significantly alter air emissions, but approximately 50% more ash is produced at a 20% inclusion rate. Also, high levels of alkaline metals suggest the potential of a slagging fuel problem that needs further investigation. The results from this study support a field test burn of poultry manure at a 20% inclusion rate in coal.
