Innovative Design Features of A Soil Bin to Facilitate Research on Soil-Tool Interaction

A soil bin test facility has been designed to study on soil-tool interaction. It features a 20-m long by 2.44-m wide by 1-m deep bin, which supports eight segmented soil boxes. Soil conditions can be changed by inserting replacement soil box. The bin can be inclined up to the maximum slope grade of 20%. A hydraulic drive system is used to pull a carriage by a chain. Carriage consists of a chassis and a tool frame, and its travel speed is variable within 20 km/h. The carriage has a capacity of testing three prototypes of tools in each run. The tool frame of the carriage is reversible that allows the carriage to simulate uphill and downhill tillage operations. Also, the tool frame can be controlled to simulate tillage operations on curvatures. It can be used to study the kinematics of soil-engaging tools, assess the erodibility of landscape and the erosivity of tillage etc.
