Soil Forces and Shank Vibration on Deep TillagePublished by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph, Michigan www.asabe.org Citation: Paper number 021086, 2002 ASAE Annual Meeting . (doi: 10.13031/2013.9320) @2002Authors: K. Chandon and R.L. Kushwaha Keywords: draft, cutting edge, rake angle Performance of different tillage tools was investigated in sandy loam and clay loam fields at an operating depth of 180 mm. The tools included a Flat, 90 , 40 , and an elliptical cutting edge on the tool with 20 and 33 rake angles. Draft, vertical, and side forces were measured using six load cells in a three directional arrangement such that two load cells measured draft, three measured vertical force and one measured the side force. An accelerometer was used to investigate the movement of the shank, a potentiometer to determine working depth, and a magnetic pickup to measure travel speed. The resultant force on each tool was calculated to determine the most energy efficient tool. Results indicated that two of the modified tools had lower draft than the predicted values. The draft and vertical forces for the elliptical attachment were the highest. Draft and vertical forces increased with an increase in speed for all the tools. The two soil types used exhibited different soil forces. (Download PDF) (Export to EndNotes)
