The Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM) was calibrated and validated with subsurface tile drainage systems in Atlantic Canada. The drainage system includes a typical tile drain system (100 mm diameter drains at 80 cm depth) and smaller diameter system (50 mm) at 50 and 80 cm drain depths, all with 12 m spacings between the laterals. Each drainage spacing / depth was hydrologically isolated by buffer drains and replicated three times. The model was calibrated for Debert soil at 80 cm drain depth using field data of 1997. The model was then validated using 1996 field data for Debert, Queens and Kingsville soil types and using 1997 field data for Queens and Kingsville soil types. Both the graphical displays and statistical results showed an overall agreement between the predicted and measured outflow rate values. Therefore, it can be concluded that RZWQM can be used in predicting tile outflow rates for designing and operating subsurface tile drainage systems in Atlantic Canada conditions.
