A common technique for irrigation scheduling is to budget water in the root zone of the crop (Prajamwong, 1997; Singh, 1992; Smajstrla et al. 1988). Irrigation scheduling in humid regions using water budgeting techniques requires at least a two-container model. This is a result of the large contribution to the crops evapotranspiration (ET) from rainfall, in the region of the root zone that is not irrigated.

A second issue associated to water budgeting methods using climate-based estimations of ET is the data requirements for accurate estimations of ET. Particularly for microirigation systems, where frequent small irrigations are applied, reasonably accurate estimations of ET and measurement of rainfall are required over short periods of time.

This work addresses both of the issues above by using a two-container model for irrigation scheduling with an Internet connection to a network of real-time weather stations.
