Sørensen Keywords: Fuzzy Soil Boundaries, EM38, GIS, Soil Mapping In classical soil mapping, map unit delineation is considered abrupt even though all experienced survey personnel are aware of the fact that delineation width varies from abrupt to broad transition zones. The objective of this study is to present 1. new methods for classifying soil map delineations using the EM38 sensor and 2. new ways of representing transition zone width in GIS. Application of the electromag-netic sensor, EM38, provides an opportunity for classifying the width of transition zones by calculating the spatial rate of change in the interpolated EM38 map across map unit delineation. Multiple grids each containing membership values of a soil type express the changing fuzziness along the delineations. The layered structure of fuzzy soil types provides a tool for modelling the spatial distribution of soil parameters. (Download PDF) (Export to EndNotes)
