Drift Management Using Modeling and GIS SystemsPublished by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph, Michigan www.asabe.org Citation: Pp. 290-296 in Proceedings of the World Congress of Computers in Agriculture and Natural Resources (13-15, March 2002, Iguacu Falls, Brazil) 701P0301.(doi:10.13031/2013.8343)Authors: A.J. Hewitt, J. Maber and J.P. Praat Keywords: Drift, modeling, GIS, spray The management of pesticide drift from aerial, ground and orchard spray applications requires consideration of many factors relating to the application, tank mix, meteorological conditions and site/ downwind areas. Tools have been developed to facilitate modeling drift based on key parameters such as droplet size spectrum, tank mix physical properties, sprayer characteristics and meteorological conditions. These tools are being combined with a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) based spatial framework for application and sensitive area locations to provide real-time support for application decisions. The final product is well suited to a computer-based spray application management tool. The present paper describes such a tool which has been developed initially for orchard spraying in New Zealand, but may soon be extended to other application types and countries, via CD ROM and/ or the internet.
