VARIABLE RATE HEATER CONTROL FOR LIVESTOCK SPACE HEATINGPublished by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph, Michigan www.asabe.org Citation: Applied Engineering in Agriculture. 18(2): 245–253. An unvented liquid propanegas (LP) space heater, often used in animal housing, was modified to provide
automated variable heat output. As manufactured, the heater had manuallyadjusted output settings between 14.7 and
29.3 kW (50,000 and 100,000 Btu/h). The heater was modified by adding a stepper motor and speed reducer to the manual
proportioning valve to provide continuous and automated heater output adjustment between 14.7 and 29.3 kW.
