It is argued that 6 th level sub-watersheds which range in size from 4-16,000 hectares (10-40,000 acres) is suitable for TMDL assessment of river segments. Our basis for doing so are the following: 1) the sub-watersheds are being consistently delineated nation-wide according to Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) guidelines, 2) the sub-watersheds are appropriately matched for the widely recognized 1:24,000 scale local maps, and 3) sub-watersheds can be used to estimate relevant water and transport processes relevant to TMDLs.
