Two mixed land-use agricultural watersheds, each with four successive surface impoundments, were used for nutrient movement comparison in surface runoff. Both watersheds are mixed land-use with grazed rangeland and winter-wheat, however, one has an upstream dairy operation. Surface impoundments within each watershed were sampled monthly from winter to summer and analyzed for nitrate-nitrogen, bioavailable and water-soluble phosphorus. Results suggest that water quality in surface impoundments in the watershed with the dairy operation was impacted more than the other watershed. While no difference was found with nitrate-nitrogen concentrations for either watershed, bioavailable and water-soluble phosphorus concentrations were found to be higher in the watershed associated with the dairy operation. However, these levels decreased downstream of the dairy operation suggesting the surface impoundments mitigated some of the adverse water quality impacts of bioavailable and water-soluble phosphorus.
