A Study of a Vertical Single-Screw Extruder

A self-setup single-screw extruder was studied to manufacture Chinese rice foods in this paper. Most of the components of the extruder, except the control panel, were set up on the stainless steel frame. The frame could be rotated from 0 to 90 0 . Therefore, the single-screw extruder could extrude materials horizontally or vertically. In this study, specifically, extrusion direction (horizontal and vertical), type of discharge (annulus and circular), and screw speed (30 and 60 rpm) were investigated for their effects on the physical properties of extrudate. Results of the study showed that the vertical extrusion with less screw speed was more suitable for the manufacture of traditional Chinese rice foods.
