Spray Deposit Distribution from Agricultural Boom Sprayers in Dynamic Conditions

One of the most important requirements on agricultural boom sprayers is to produce a uniform distribution of the applied pesticide on the target area. This is commonly tested on a patternator. Since it is not possible to consider the influence of boom movements with such a test, a new test procedure has been developed by the Federal Biological Research Centre Braunschweig (BBA). The travel of the sprayer on a typical field track is simulated by a servo-hydraulic test bench and the dynamic spray deposit distribution below the moving boom is measured using a special system on-line in well defined conditions. Several types of sprayers were tested and a range of 5 to 22% was found for coefficient of variation of spray deposit distribution at the boom tip. Alternatively, other approaches have been examined for determining dynamic spray deposit distribution on the basis of dynamic spray boom behavior identification and simulation of static spray distribution.

A coefficient of variation of 15% is proposed as performance limit for dynamic spray distribution from new sprayers.
