Vacuum sewer collection systems have proven to be a practical and cost effective means of wastewater collection when the local topography is flat and thaw unstable ground prohibits buried utilities. There are 10 vacuum collection systems currently in operation or under construction in rural Alaska. This paper provides a brief overview of cold regions factors associated with the design and construction of vacuum sewers. The recent $12.9 million (US) combined vacuum sewer with circulating water distribution system in Savoonga, Alaska is described.
