Abstract. The onion (Allium cepa L.) is a globally significant vegetable and spice crop, essential to household diets and agrarian economies. In Bangladesh, it ranks as the second most widely cultivated vegetable by land and production. Storage losses of onion in Bangladesh are primarily caused by inadequate control of storage temperature and relative humidity, resulting in excessive weight loss, sprouting, and reduced marketable yield. This study developed and evaluated an IoT-based smart onion storage system that integrates real-time environment parameters monitoring and automated ventilation to regulate storage conditions. The system maintained temperature and relative humidity within narrower and more favorable ranges compared to traditional farmer storage, thereby ensuring enhanced microclimatic stability. Over an about 80-day storage period, the smart system reduced total storage losses by 8.59% compared to conventional storage. Physiological weight loss was significantly reduced (19.96% vs. 27.27%). As a result, the proportion of marketable onions increased to 76.81%, compared to 68.22% in traditional storage. These results demonstrate that IoT-enabled environment regulation can effectively minimize storage losses and enhance onion storage performance, offering a practical and scalable solution for smallholder farmers in Bangladesh.
