Renovating the iPMU via Internet of Things for pollutant emission estimations in poultry facilities

Abstract. The emissions of ammonia (NH3), particulate matter (PM), and carbon dioxide (CO2) are major concerns in egg-laying facilities. They can pose environmental concerns and health risks to employees and birds in these facilities. Robust and affordable measurement systems are needed to accurately quantify the emissions. The Intelligent Portable Monitoring Unit (iPMU) developed by Ji et al. (2016) was upgraded in this study to carry out accurate measurements of the concentrations near real-time and, with suitable ventilation measurement, to provide emission rates for NH3 and PM. This paper documents the upgrade of the previous iPMU into an IoT (Internet of Things) system and provides a user-friendly interface to visualize data. The renovated iPMU simplifies data storage and processing by introducing cloud computing for analysis and visualization. The upgraded iPMU is designed to be an end-to-end system with both uplink and downlink communications. The uplink involves sending telemetry payloads to the cloud, and the downlink involves sending commands from the cloud to the remote machine. The commands allow for remotely controlling the iPMU. The initial tests showed that the data acquisition and visualization are more convenient and reliable with the upgraded iPMU. Upon completion, the renovated iPMU will be tested and used in a laying hen facility.
