Effects of biochar-based control release nitrogen fertilizers on corn growth in greenhouse trials

Abstract. Nitrogen fertilizers play very important roles in corn production. Compared to conventional nitrogen fertilizers (e.g., Ammonium sulfate), control release fertilizers can provide better availability of nutrients for a longer time during corn plants growing. The goal of this study is to examine the effects of different biochar-based control release nitrogen fertilizers (BCRNFs) on corn growth in greenhouse trials. Three different BCRNF samples were prepared using different ratios of ammonium sulphate (AS) and biochar (BC) combined with biosolid (BS), spicing compost (SC) and worming compost (WC) separately, followed by coating with 5% of polylactic acid (PLA) solution. The results indicate that the BCRNFs may significantly affect corn growth and N loss in leaching. The BCRNF showed very promising potential on corn yield and N loss reduction, but further research is needed.
