Establishment of a CA park to investigate long term conservation agriculture practices to improve soil health for sustainable crop production

Abstract. Conservation agriculture is a farming system with good agricultural practice to improve soil organic carbon which is declining due to extensive tillage, intensive cropping practice and high yielding varieties. A conservation agriculture park (CA Park) has been established in Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur (23059′05.0″N, 90024′50.9″E) during 2020-21 with the cooperation of ASMIH-Bangladesh project to evaluate the long-term effect of CA on soil health and crop yield. The whole park (1.0 ha) has been divided into four sections to conduct different CA experiments through land development and leveling. The first (southern) section is high land which is used for conducting tillage and studying residue effect on crop productivity, soil health and profitability in maize-cover crop-rice cropping pattern. The second section is medium land for testing and validation of different CA machinery. The third section is also medium land and used for legume-rice-cover crop cropping pattern. The fourth section (northern) is low land for unpuddled rice planting in long term rice-rice-rice cropping pattern. The maize and mungbean experiments were conducted with four tillage methods such as strip, zero, bed planting and conventional method. Rice experiment was conducted with manual transplanting in conventional tilled soil, mechanical transplanting in conventional tilled soil, manual transplanting in unpuddled soil and mechanical transplanting in unpuddled soil. The yield of maize, mungbean and rice were not varied with the treatments since advantage of CA could not be achieved in the first year. This CA Park will assist to generate knowledge and disseminate it to farmers, students, researchers and policy makers.
