Coefficient of restitution of kiwifruit collision without external force interference in different ripeness

Abstract. Coefficient of restitution (CoR) is an important parameter required to simulate kinematics and collision physics of various materials using simulation software. Most current methods for measuring CoR of fruit-fruit collision (FFC) are interfered by external forces. Hence, it is necessary to investigate the FFC without external interference to ensure the accuracy of CoR. In this study, a platform with slide method was designed to realize the FFC of kiwifruit without external force interference. Firmness of kiwifruit in different ripening times of 0 d (Day 0), 4 d (Day 4), and 8 d (Day 8)was measured through puncture tests. Results showed that the firmness and CoR of FFC decreased with ripening but reverse in bruise volume. The CoR was over 0.58 for the lowest collision velocity of 1.1 m s-1. At Day 8, the maximum standard deviation of the CoR accounted for nearly 50% of the mean, same as the standard deviation of firmness. Total bruise volume (TBV) decreased with increasing CoR. Fruit damage did not occur when the CoR was over 0.58. At Day 0, anti-damage capacity of the fruit was more substantial than Day 4 or Day 8. This paper presents a method to determine the CoR of the FFC without external force interference. This methodology and its results will help establish a more accurate fruit model and thus designing optimal fruit harvesting and post-harvesting systems.
