Simulation of milk logistics in small-structured milk production areas in southern Germany

Abstract. The transport of milk from the dairy farm to the dairy is a typical collective logistics. Especially in small-structured areas with many farms between 30 and 240 dairy cows, logistics costs are an important factor. The development of a management tool for dynamic milk volume forecasting and raw milk logistics simulation will be demonstrated on the basis of four typical milk catchment areas in the south of Germany. Against the background of the continuous structural change in milk production and processing, the use of eleven different process variants of raw milk logistics will be simulated with regard to full costs, greenhouse gas emissions and time. The milk quantity forecast results in an average growth of 0.47% per year. However, a farm abandonment rate of 3.02 % per year and an increase in milk volume of 4.07 % per milk producer per year can be observed. Between regions, the full costs of milk logistics vary between 0.89 €Ct/kg in the region closest to the dairy and 3.06 € Ct/kg in the region furthest away. The specific GHG emissions are between 8.63 g CO2-eq/kg milk and 32.90 g CO2-eq/kg milk, while the time efficiency is between 0.64 s/kg and 2.37 s/kg. Due to the higher cost estimates for wages, fuel and tolls in the simulation year 2023, this results in cost increases of up to 22.4%. This cost increase can be significantly reduced in specific areas through optimised technology. It can be seen that for the unbroken process variants, the solo collection trailer is the most efficient. For the broken process variants, the three-axle truck with trailer and semi-trailer is the optimal variant.
