Abstract. Soluble solids content (SSC) and firmness in apples are important parameters to determine the quality of apples. During the storage process, SSC and firmness change very quickly. How to detect these quality indicators in real-time and non-destructive has become a crucial problem for fruit merchants and fruit growers. The objective of this study was to develop a portable device for nondestructive detection of apple quality. For this device, the finger-tip sized spectrometer was used as the detection component, and the light source driving circuit, analog to digital converter driving circuit, and other circuits were designed on the same circuit board. The spectral data and physicochemical indicators of apple were obtained in the same environment, and then the prediction models of SSC and firmness were established by using partial least squares regression (PLS), which were imported into the device. So that the portable device could directly predict the SSC and firmness. Finally, an independent experiment was designed to complete the detection accuracy and stability test of the detector. The results showed that the model could accurately predict the SSC, with the correlation coefficient (Rp), the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP), and the ratio of the standard deviation of the reference destructive value to the RMSEP (RPD) of 0.871, 0.345 %, and 2.062, respectively. That for firmness were 0.813, 0.391 kg/cm2, and 1.659, respectively. Independent data verified this device, with the accuracy of for firmness.
