Zoning and determine the best indicator of drought in southwest Iran

Abstract. Drought is a climatic phenomenon that can occur in any part of the world and in any climatic conditions. Drought is one of the most important natural disasters that has affected many countries and has caused many problems, including economic, social, political, and cultural—this phenomenon in different parts of Iran due to arid and semi-arid climate has more appearance. In this study, mixed indices were used to zone the drought and determine the best index in Khuzestan province. Precipitation data were applied for drought evaluation from 1980 to 2019 on an annual and monthly basis. Arc GIS software was used for zoning the drought. The results of different methods of estimating climatic drought showed that in recent years the severity and duration of droughts have increased. Then, different methods were compared; results showed that SPI is the most accurate method in for determining drought. The results of drought zoning showed that droughts were more severe in the southern and western parts of Khuzestan province.
