Continuous Production of Ethyl Ester from Corn Oil by Liquid Plasma Catalysis

Abstract. In order to reduce limitations in the transesterification process, a new liquid-phase plasma discharge (LPPD) system was developed to rapidly and continuously produce ethyl ester from corn oil and ethanol. The system was evaluated and optimized for LPPD examined at different ethanol to oil molar ratios (5:1, 6:1, 7:1, 8:1, and 9:1) and different oil to NaOH weight concentrations (0.5, 0.75, 1, and 1.25% for catalyst concentration). The optimizing condition for liquid phase plasma discharge was 8:1 molar ratio and 1%wt. catalyst at 2.4 ml/s flowrate with the conversion rate of 99.12 at 5.25 kV applied voltage. The quantitative analysis was performed using GCMS equipment.
