Abstract. King grass is a kind of high stalk grass widely planted in South China, and it is widely used as a new forage resource. The mechanical properties of the stem at the bottom of the plant were studied by using the universal testing machine. The results showed that the axial compression modulus and radial compression modulus of the straw decreased with the increase of water content, and the variation of water content was significant among the different water content ranges. Compared with some high stalk crops, the modulus of elasticity of tensile and compression is larger, that is, the shape change of the straw under the same volume is larger when it is under the same load, which is more likely to cause the blocking of the harvesting device. The results provide a theoretical basis for the development of the harvesting device of the king grass.
