Determination of Ammonium Nitrogen and Soluble Carbohydrate in Alfalfa Silage

Abstract. Alfalfa is widely cultivated for its high yield and rich protein content, and has become one of the main cultivated forages in China.Alfalfa silage is a good storage method, which can reduce the loss of nutrients. Alfalfa has a unique aroma and sour taste after silage, which increases the feed intake of livestock.In this study, the content of ammonium nitrogen in silage alfalfa was determined by phenol-sodium hypochlorite colorimetry.When determining ammonium nitrogen, the absorbance value was measured by colorimetry at the wavelength of 630nm with a spectrophotometer. The standard curve of ammonium was drawn with the concentration of standard ammonium solution as the abscissa and the absorbance value as the ordinate.The concentration of ammonium nitrogen was obtained by standard curve.
