The Trellis Framework for Automatic Food Safety Data Transfer

Food safety audits and certifications are a critical component of a global safe food supply. Currently the transfer of this information is largely manual and time-consuming, limiting the value available to various stages of the supply chain. To address this, we describe here the Trellis API Framework for automated data connections. Trellis enables the automatic flow of information between the various actors in the supply chain. This paper will cover the framework and review a proof-of-concept demonstration of Trellis. The Trellis Framework utilizes the Open Ag Data Alliance (OADA) API standards. It allows creating connections between pairs of actors who interact (e.g., grower to packer, packer to distributor). Once connections are established, audits, certifications, and any other designated data (along with their associated digital signatures) are automatically shared from the one end of the connection to the other. If many actors in the supply chain utilize Trellis and setup connections to their direct partners, food safety and other data can automatically flow from the start of the chain to the end (e.g., from auditors to retailers) in real-time.
