Optimal sensor placement for temperature monitoring inside broiler houses

Abstract. The poultry industry in South Korea is facing a labor shortage due to the aging of farmers. Commercial broiler houses had been applied Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and automated system for reducing labor and increasing productivity. The automated controlling system in livestock house is based on various environmental variables. These environmental variables have to be monitored at the representative location. In this study, optimization of temperature sensor placement inside broiler houses is conducted. Temperature monitoring data were used for analysis. Optimal sensor placements are selected among the monitoring locations. By applying brute-force method, all of the possible combinations of monitoring locations are evaluated and optimal sensor placements are selected according to the number of deployed sensors. Optimization was conducted by two methods: error based sensor placement and entropy based sensor placement. Error based sensor placement selects sensor locations for which monitored data are close to the reference value, which is the average of all of the monitored data. Entropy based sensor placement selects the location for which monitored data have high information entropy. By applying these two methods, sensor locations that represent the entire facility and detect abnormal situation can be selected.
