Numerical Model of Maize Straw under Ultra-high Pressure Waterjet

Current no-till seeders which working in the fields covered with large amount of maize straw/stubble faced the problems that becoming blocked around the rotating blades or could not cut off the heavy straw. These problems result in lower emergence rate and yield. Thus, the research for a new approach of anti-block device has been undertaken. An ultra-high pressure (UHP) pure water jet pre-opener was used to overcome these weaknesses. To figure out the cutting performance of maize straw, the DEM numerical model was established to analysis cutting process for maize straw/stubble under UHP water jet cutting. The mechanical properties of maize were analyzed for model building and the cutting simulation was performed as nozzle diameter 0.3 mm at 300 MPa water pressure, while the maize straw diameter was 24 mm. The simulation reflected the kinetic behavior of the maize straw. Moreover, a high-speed camera was used to record cutting process. These was an agreement between simulation and experimental results which meant the model could be valuable for the further studies on UHP water jet pre-opener no-till seeders and lay foundation of fsi simulation of maize straw under UHP pure water jet.(Download PDF) (Export to EndNotes)
