Development of a Small-sized Chinese Cabbage Harvesting Machine

Abstract. Chinese cabbage is one of very popular crops in Republic of Korea. The cultivation area of Chinese cabbages is up to 61.2%, and production rate is 80.2%, which is the highest among the leafy vegetables in this country. Despite of their large production, the harvesting of the Chinese cabbages still depends on manual labors. The most important reason why their cultivation is hard is the Chinese cabbages are mostly grown on middle highland. Harvesting conditions change a lot according to the slope of topographies, climate, and breeds. These influence supplying problems, resulting in the fluctuation of price. Furthermore, 94% of them is produced in farming households, less than half a hectare of farmland. Therefore, small-sized chinese cabbage harvesting machine should be developed for stable harvest of chinese cabbage. In this study, a small-sized Chinese cabbage harvesting machine was developed for the mechanization of Chinese cabbage harvest. In order to determine the cutting quality of roots that do not interfere with the commercial quality of Chinese cabbage, the number of leaves depending on 10, 20, 30, and 40 mm cutting from heads were analyzed. As a result, it was confirmed that the maximum cutting depth should be limited to 30 mm. Based on the data, cutting part were designed of three parts: drawing, cutting, and excreting parts. Transporting belt is made of three tiers to avoid the Chinese cabbage from shaking when cutting. and drawing part were made to allow Chinese cabbages to be inserted into the transporting belts without any conformational changes. The Chinese cabbage harvesting machine developed through this research is expected to contribute greatly to the development of the agricultural producing industry in Republic of Korea
