Abstract.   Due to their small size, the heat production of insects and insect larvae is hard to quantify. A gradient calorimeter was designed and constructed to isolate insect larvae from the outside environment and measure the heat rate they produce during normal activity. The following paper describes the design and construction of the gradient calorimeter, how it was calibrated, and how to use it to collect heat rate data of small organisms.
