Abstract. Studies of water cycle in irrigation systems show that irrigation return flow is the main reason of agricultural non-point source pollution, and the proportion of return flow is high enough to affect the water cycle process in the irrigation district. However, traditional water efficiency statistics index such as effective coefficient of irrigative water utilization just ignore the effect of return water, this ignorance leads to the underestimation of water efficiency and the overestimation of water-saving potential.
