Detection of moldy corn kernels using image processing technique based on the Android operating system

Abstract. Mildew in corn kernels not only causes reduction in nutritional value, but also induces health hazards to livestock and humans. It is necessary to detect and reject moldy corn kernels from the sound ones. A rapid detection method of moldy corn kernels using image processing tool, which is supported by Android operating system equipped mobile cell phone, was proposed in this paper. A general application software adopting algorithms including graying processing, median filtering, area marking, and color segmentation was developed in order to detect moldy corn kernels. The average detection accuracy of moldy corn kernels was 82.91%, which showed effectiveness of the proposed method.
