Developing nanocelluloses from prairie cordgrass by combination of homogenizing and chemical pretreatments

Abstract.

Acid and alkali was applied for the pretreatment of prarie cordgrass to produce nanocelluloses. Chemical pretreatment and homogenization was found to be effective in the depolymerization and defibrillation of prarie cordgrass celluloses to produce nanocelluloses. The morphology and particle size of the nanocelluloses were characterized using microscopy. The mean nanocellulose size produced by 2h homogenizing treatment was ranging from 30 to 230 nm. The developed nanocelluloses have the potential for a wide range of biotechnological applications such as tissue engineering and food packaging.
