Evaluating crop management and drainage practices for two monitored sites using gridded distributive hydrological model

In this study, GSSHA was used to simulate two Discovery Farm sites located in Blue Earth and Goodhue counties. The Blue Earth site was monitored for tile and flume flows while the Goodhue site was monitored for flume flow only. In addition, both sites have been extensively monitored for rainfall and water quality. The monitoring information was then used to calibrate and study the model‘s various hydrological processes such as surface water runoff, infiltration, groundwater interaction, evapotranspiration, snowmelt and sediment transport. The effects of tile drainage on water balance with varied tillage practices and crop plantings were simulated for various field management scenarios that were not feasible or considered during the monitoring periods. Model results will be presented that can complement the monitoring data and enhance the research value of the Discovery Farms program through scenario analysis, without which could take years to develop.(Download PDF) (Export to EndNotes)
