Housing thermal comfort zone for weaned to growing pigs

Abstract.
The pig productivity after weaning seems to be mostly affected by the thermal variations inside the house. This research aimed to describe a thermal comfort zone for weaned to growing piglets using a fuzzy inference system. The experiment was carried out on a commercial pig farm. Dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed were recorded continuously. Each room had 35 piglets weighing 7 kg in average. The housing floor area was 100 m2, and the height was 3 m. ANOVA was applied to the data, and graphs of the data distributions were used for building up a table of rules. Published data on piglet performance under certain thermal conditions was also considered. Five piglets in each room were weighed every week during the experimental period, and behavior was observed regarding their heat and cold stress exposure. Fuzzy functions were developed from the experimental results and the data from the current literature to build up a surface of the possible thermal comfort zone for piglets.
