Thermal amplitude impacts pig productivity loss in tropical conditions

Abstract.
This study aimed to identify the main causes of pork carcass condemnation due to weather variations in pork industry losses. Two databases were used in the present study from 2010 to 2014. The temperature humidity index (THI) was calculated, and separated into three levels: Normal (THI≤ 79), Danger (79<THI≤ 83), Emergency (84<THI). The winter showed larger thermal amplitude than summer, fall and spring (p < 0.001). Lungs diseases lead to the highest losses (31.3%), followed by the kidney diseases (28.3%), the liver issues (14.7%), and heart problems (8.1%). The meat loss annual estimate is nearly 18 103 tons; which represents 0.54% of the total Brazilian annually processed pork. The maximum temperature humidity index values (MTHI) were found during summer and spring, differing from fall and winter (p < 0.05). The THI Emergency group (THI> 84) presented positive and stronger correlation with pork carcass condemnation than THI Danger group (79 to 83).
