Abstract. An improved standard diffusion approximation model (ISDA) is developed to address the limitations of nearly isotropic ray radiation and source-detector separation is much greater than one transport mean free path ). Results show that ISDA can significantly improve curve error of diffuse distribution than SDA, and gives much higher inversion accuracy simultaneously. Moreover, compared with two-point-source Delta-P1 approximation model, ISDA obtains the similar accuracy, and overcomes the drawbacks of the poor reproducibility of the inversion parameters.
