Abstract.
Wheat straw was torrefied at temperatures ranging from 250 to 300℃ for 30 min in a bench-scale fixed bed reactor. Mass and energy yields occurred during torrefaction were analyzed, and the physical and chemical of the raw and torrefied wheat straw were characterized in order to assess the effects of torrefaction on the physicochemical properties of wheat straw. The high heating value was improved from 17.88MJ/kg to 22.08MJ/kg as torrefaction temperature increased. We find the best results at torrefaction temperature of 300℃ in terms of maximizing the HHV and maximizing energy density. Also, energy yields of the byproducts could be predicted from mass loss values. Results demonstrated that torrefaction allows transforming wheat straw into a coal-like material, which would imply a profitable way to manage these wastes.
