NexRad N1P data and Ground-based Rainfall Time Series Comparison in the Little Washita Watershed

Abstract. The rainfall time series recorded by NexRad (Next Generation Radar) and Ground-based stations was compared in terms of the sum of monthly rainfall, rain and no-rain probabilities, and rainfall events distribution in the Little Washita watershed in OK. The result showed that the NexRad has a tendency of recording the heavy and intense rainfall higher than the ground-based rainfall and the rainfall less than 2.54 mm as 0. NexRad has a tendency of recording higher rainfall when events have high intensity and long duration. As a result, the rainfall recorded in the months of March, April, May, June, and August are more close to the rainfall recorded from the ground-based station with the average different percentage of less than 25%. Rainfall recorded in the other months can easily be affected by extreme rainfall events and the difference is usually higher than 40%. These differences should be taken into consideration when deciding which datasets can best describe the processes to be modeled.
