Optimal Harvest Timing for Maximizing Grain Yield and Whole Kernel Ratio of Short-Grain Rice

Abstract. Changes in the quality of short-grain rice based on harvest timing were investigated. Field tests were conducted for four years from 2010 to 2013, and moisture content (MC), whole kernel ratio (WKR), and grain yield (GY) were measured. MC was strongly influenced by the weather and decreased or increased with rain or frost, but the long-term rate of MC reduction showed a trend of similar values. The rate of MC reduction for each year was respectively 0.34, 0.32, 0.22, and 0.34 percentage points per day. The MC of rough rice increased after rain but then decreased rapidly. As a result, the overall rate of MC reduction showed no significant change. The day after heading (DAH) of maximum WKR was respectively 60, 70, 80, and 82 DAH for each year, and the DAH of maximum GY was respectively 46, 70, 87, and 67 DAH. The MC of maximum GY ranged from 16.5% to 21.0%, which was 3% to 6% lower than the general harvest MC in South Korea. This result will reduce the drying cost of rough rice to ensure farmers a competitive price.
