Abstract. For the needs of in-situ remediation and rapid detection of heavy metals including lead, chromium, zinc and copper, the soil heavy metal detector based on the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis technology was developed. This instrument has advantages of simultaneous monitoring of over 5 elements, low detection limit, rapid and nondestructive detection, convenient use and low maintenance costs. In this paper, the overall design and the main structure of the instrument was introduced, and performance tests were carried out, with results showing that the stable performance of this analyzer reached the international level of similar instruments. Experimental results showed that the soil heavy metal detector had high reliability and strong field application capacity to meet the needs of field applications.
