Abstract. Rice is one of the key crops in China. The precise sowing of rice has been attracted much more attentions. The seed metering device is the key to affect the sowing performance. To improve the single seed rate and reduce the leakage sowing rate, geometric parameters of seeds were measured accurately by three dimension scanning technique. The process of the seed filling into the cell was analyzed by high-speed photography technology. The structure design of the cell wheel with irregular cells design based on rice seed contour and dynamically filling theory were discussed and the seed filling condition was derived. The important factors to affect the sowing performance was attained. After theory analyses, the optimum parameters for the metering device were obtained by orthogonal experimental design and the optimization was verified by tests. The results showed that the rate of qualified sowing was > 90% when the length of the cell, the width of the cell, the angle of the cell and the speed of the cell wheel were 10mm,4.2mm,90ºand 12r/min, respectively. The metering device can meet the precise sowing requirement.
