Effect of Moisture Content on some Frictional Properties of Bush Mango (Irvingia Gabonensis) Nut

Abstract. Effect of moisture content on frictional properties (coefficient of friction, internal angle of friction and angle of repose) of Irvingia gabonensis nuts were studied on four structural surfaces (Glass, Plastic, Plywood and Galvanized Iron). The five moisture level of the nuts were 11.56%, 16.32%, 20.01%, 23.80%, and 26.30% wet-basis respectively. A set of twenty nuts each at different moisture level was used in the determination of the frictional properties and the result showed coefficient of friction to be least on glass and plastic with the same value of 85.90 while internal angle of friction was 140 on both surfaces all at 11.56% moisture level and at the highest moisture level of 26.30%, the values were 88.40 and 330 for coefficient of friction and internal angle of friction respectively on both plywood and galvanized iron. Angle of repose followed the same trend with least value of 23.200 at moisture level of 11.56% and highest value of 43.600 at 26.30% moisture level. The least value for frictional properties was found to be on glass and plastic while highest on plywood and Galvanized Iron. This suggests that glass or plastic is preferable for the design of contact surfaces, hoppers and other storage bins as this can enhance easy flow of materials in processing.(Download PDF) (Export to EndNotes)
