Design and evaluation of a novel type of greenhouse for Ningxia’s windy-sandy-dry belt vegetable production

Abstract. Ningxia district locates in the north west of China. The middle Ningxia has the special climate features like extremely lack of water, plenty of sunshine and strong wind with sand. The local poor cultivation conditions caused the low agricultural output and the poor income of farmers. The existing widely-used greenhouses cannot fit the local cultivation mode well and it is in great need to design an effective greenhouse to cope with the local poor cultivation conditions. A groove type of greenhouse was designed in this manuscript. The greenhouse can be 80m (length)*10m (width) *3.5m (height). Half of the greenhouse was designed under the ground. The depth under and above the ground are separately about 2m and 1.5m. There are two wind shields at each side of the greenhouse at 1m. Transparency film was used at the top of the greenhouse to let the sunshine in and the insulating layer was used to preserve the heat. Kind of rain-collecting cellar was constructed nearby to collect rain for irrigation in winter. The total cost of the groove type of greenhouse is

about 30,000 RMB, which is much lower than the common greenhouse 80,000RMB. The greenhouse was constructed from Sep., 2011 and finished in Dec., 2011. Garlic chives were grown in the greenhouse for the preliminary test. The output yield can reach 3000-4000Kg per 667m2 per year. The time to market of the vegetable can right fill the market sale gap and realize the sustainable supply for all the year. This type of greenhouse can prevent wind and save water well and proved an important supplement for Ningxia’s current facility types.
