Physical and Chemical Characteristics of Drainage Oil

Abstract. Drainage oil was defined as refined oil from used edible oil, pork, pig offal, pigskin and sewer waste oil. Normally, it is reused as a biomass to produce biodiesel and others. To identify the differences between normal oil and drainage oil for establishing rapid and reliable methods to differentiate them, their physical and chemical characteristics were investigated. Physical and chemical characteristics of four drainage oil samples were investigated. Three chemical indexes (acid value, iodine value, peroxide value) and two physical indexes (moisture and volatile matter, petroleum ether insoluble matter) of drainage oil samples were compared with two normal oil samples. Results showed that the iodine value and the moisture and volatile matter of the drainage oil samples were higher than those of the normal oil samples. There was no obvious difference between the acid value, peroxide value, petroleum ether insoluble matter of the drainage oil samples and those of the normal oil samples. The storage experiments indicated that the peroxide value and the iodine value of the drainage oil samples increased more obviously than those of the normal oil samples.
