Determination of working pressure range in a centralized pneumatic metering device for maize

Abstract. This paper involves a centralized pneumatic metering device for maize, a novel sowing method that distributes seeds to several rows through a metering device which consists of a centre drum and a positive press system. One of the most important factors for the performance of this metering device is the working pressure. Experiments were carried out through a metering device test-bed PS-12. Pressure in the working chamber was measured to find the appropriate range of the working pressure. The metering device has steady performance with the working pressure within the range of 2.0~5.5 kPa. The miss rate is 2.50% when the working pressure is 2.0 kPa, and it was founded that the higher, the better. The average is 0.19% with the working pressure of 2.5~5.5 kPa. The multiple rate increases with the rise of the working pressure, and the average multiple rate is 2.62% with the working pressure of 2.0~3.5 kPa. The average qualified rate is 96.56% with the working pressure of 2~3.5 kPa. One-way ANOVA analysis was adopted to investigate the influence of the working pressure on the performance indices. The results showed that, the range of 2.5~5.5 kPa, the pressure had no significant differences on the miss rate, while there is highly significant influence on both multiple rate and qualified rate.
