Comparison of application strategies for fixed-media treatment of turkey processing wastewater

Abstract. Turkey processing wastewater has been successfully treated in sand/gravel bioreactors. Two strategies for wastewater application were evaluated; demand-dosing and time-dosing. Demand-dosing systems are relatively simple and low cost. However, time-dosing systems that require large equalization basins and control systems are often recommended. Insufficient information is available to justify this recommendation. In a laboratory experiment six fixed-media bioreactors at 22± 2 oC were dosed with turkey processing wastewater (BOD5 90 -1460 mg/l).Three bioreactors were time-dosed at 4 cm/day at 1 dose per hour for 24 hr/day. Three bioreactors were dosed 24 times over two 3-hour time periods at 12 hr apart. BOD5 removal efficiency and bioreactor clogging were monitored. Both systems achieved 99.9% treatment efficiency with effluent BOD5 less than 2 mg/l. No difference in bioreactor clogging was observed with either dosing system. In conclusion, no significant performance difference was found between demand-dosing and time-dosing strategies.
