Field and Economic Performance of Three Tractor Models for Ploughing Operations in Sandy-clay soil of Nigeria

Tractorsâ€™ field performances are affected by soil, climatic and machine factors which in turn influences their cost and profitability. The effects of ploughing depth, speed and tractor model on operational and economic performances were examined. The soil characteristics of the study site were determined using laboratory tests. Ploughing operations, using ASABE standard D497.5 were carried out at 5.5, 6.5 and 7.5 km/h ploughing speeds for ploughing depths of 20, 25 and 30cm.
The soil type in the study site is predominantly sandy-clay. Mean fuel consumption for Fiat, MF and Steyr models were 24.26, 25.43 and 25.72 l/ha while average of 18.34.78, 23.67 and 33.39 l/ha of diesel were used for 20, 25 and 30cm ploughing depths respectively. Average ploughing efficiency are 89.45, 80.24, 76.92% and 72.49, 81.94, 92.18% for 5.5, 6.5, 7.5 km/h ploughing speed and 20, 25, 30 cm ploughing depth respectively.
Average total cost of ploughing per hectare are N8299, N8546, N8724 and N7906, N8572, N9092 for 5.5, 6.5, 7.5 km/h ploughing speed and 20, 25, 30 cm ploughing depth respectively. The average cost of fuel per hectare was N3770 which is 44% of average total variable cost and 81% of the total cost of ploughing per hectare. The average profit/loss made by Fiat, MF and Steyr tractor model ploughing in a sandy-clay soil as at 2010 are N529, N86 and N815 per hectare respectively(1$ = N146).
